Introduction
Filing your income tax return in Pakistan is mandatory for every individual earning above PKR 600,000 annually and every registered company or AOP. With the FBR's IRIS portal now handling all filings digitally, the process has become more streamlined โ but the complexity of tax slabs, wealth statements, and withholding adjustments remains.
Who Must File?
- Salaried individuals earning above PKR 600,000/year
- Business individuals with turnover above PKR 300,000
- All companies and AOPs regardless of income
- Anyone who has been on the ATL in the last 3 years
- Property owners, vehicle owners, and commercial electricity consumers
Tax Year 2025 Income Tax Slabs (Salaried)
The current slab structure for salaried individuals ranges from 0% on income up to PKR 600,000 to 35% on income exceeding PKR 5,600,000. Key thresholds include 5% at PKR 1.2M, 15% at PKR 2.4M, 25% at PKR 3.6M, and 30% at PKR 4.8M.
Required Documents
- CNIC (Computerized National Identity Card)
- All bank statements for the tax year (July-June)
- Salary certificates and tax deduction certificates
- Property documents (if applicable)
- Vehicle registration documents
- Business financials (P&L, balance sheet if applicable)
- Investment certificates (mutual funds, prizes, etc.)
Filing Deadline
The standard deadline is September 30 following the tax year end (June 30). Extensions are sometimes granted, but filing late results in removal from the Active Taxpayer List and a penalty of up to PKR 1,000/day.
Wealth Statement
Every return filer must also submit a wealth statement showing all assets, liabilities, and personal expenses for the year. The wealth statement must reconcile with your declared income โ any unexplained increase in wealth can trigger an FBR audit.
