What Is FBR Online Verification?

FBR online verification is the umbrella term for the public lookup tools the Federal Board of Revenue offers via its IRIS portal to check a person's or business's standing on Pakistan's tax registers. Anyone — taxpayer, vendor, or counterparty — can use these tools without a login. The current FBR online verification menu covers 13 distinct lookups:

  • Active Taxpayer List (Income Tax) — the main ATL for income-tax filers
  • Active Taxpayer List (AJK) — separate ATL for Azad Jammu & Kashmir
  • Active Taxpayer Lists — Downloads — bulk ATL files
  • Active Taxpayer List (Sales Tax) — sales-tax-specific ATL
  • Taxpayer Profile Inquiry — full registration profile by NTN / CNIC / STRN
  • Blacklisted Taxpayer List (Sales Tax) — flagged sales-tax registrants
  • Exemption Certificate — verify any tax exemption certificate
  • Notices/Orders Verification — confirm an FBR notice is genuine
  • Computerized Payment Receipt (CPR) — verify a tax payment
  • POS Invoice Verification — Tier-1 retailer invoice authenticity
  • Property Certificate Verification (u/s 7E) — capital value tax certificate check
  • Payment Slip ID (PSID) / CPR Verification — confirm a payment reference
  • DNFBP Registration Status — Designated Non-Financial Business or Profession

Each answers a different question, but they all share one portal — and most run in under 60 seconds. This guide walks through the lookups you'll use most often, with direct links and the gotchas you should know.

Why FBR Online Verification Matters

If you run a business in Pakistan, FBR online verification is what stops you from paying double tax. Section after section of the Income Tax Ordinance, 2001 charges roughly twice the rate on payments to Non-Active-Taxpayer-List (Non-ATL) persons. Before you pay any vendor, contractor, supplier, or service provider a substantial amount, a 30-second FBR verification:

  • Confirms their NTN is real and matches the legal name on the invoice
  • Tells you their current ATL status — so you apply the correct withholding rate
  • Surfaces any discrepancy that should be resolved before the payment, not after

For a deeper dive on why ATL status changes the rates you pay or deduct, see our complete ATL benefits guide.

How to Use FBR Online Verification for an NTN

The most common form of FBR online verification is an NTN lookup. The official tool sits inside the FBR's IRIS portal at iris.fbr.gov.pk.

  1. Open the FBR IRIS portal
  2. Choose your input type: NTN (7 digits) or CNIC (13 digits)
  3. Enter the number without dashes
  4. Solve the captcha
  5. Click Verify
  6. Read the result: registered name, status (active/inactive), and ATL status

For a complete walkthrough — including screenshots, troubleshooting, and the SMS shortcut — see our dedicated NTN verification online guide.

How to Use FBR Online Verification for ATL Status

An ATL check is essentially the second half of the same FBR online verification call — when you verify an NTN, the result already includes ATL status. But there are two FBR-specific shortcuts dedicated to ATL status:

  • SMS to 9966 — text your CNIC or NTN (no dashes); the FBR replies with the registered name and current ATL status within seconds
  • FBR IRIS portaliris.fbr.gov.pk publishes the latest ATL list with downloadable extracts

The ATL refreshes weekly. (Your underlying NTN doesn't change — only the ATL status against it.) A status of "Inactive" today may flip to "Active" once the next refresh runs after a return is filed. For why this matters across banking, vehicles, and property, see benefits of being on the ATL.

How to Use FBR Online Verification for STRN (Sales Tax)

Businesses registered for sales tax receive a Sales Tax Registration Number (STRN) in addition to an NTN. To verify any STRN online, the FBR's IRIS portal accepts the STRN as the input number. The result confirms whether the business is sales-tax-registered and whether the registration is currently active.

This is essential for input tax adjustments — you can only claim input tax against suppliers who hold a valid STRN at the time of the invoice. Verify before posting any input tax claim.

The Most-Used FBR Online Verification Lookups

Of the 13 lookups available on the FBR portal, three are used almost daily in Pakistani business: NTN / CNIC verification, ATL status, and STRN validity. The rest cover specific compliance edge cases (exemptions, notices, payments, POS invoices, 7E property certificates, etc.) that you'll reach for less frequently — but they're all in the same place when you need them.

Common FBR Online Verification Errors and Fixes

"Record not available" or "NTN not found"

Three usual causes: typo in the NTN/CNIC, the person was never registered with FBR, or the record is archived. Re-check the digits — particularly when transcribed from handwriting. If the number is correct and still not found, the person likely needs to register on the IRIS portal.

Registered name doesn't match what you expected

Either the NTN belongs to someone else with a similar CNIC, or the person's legal name on file with FBR differs from their everyday name. Always confirm the legal name with the counterparty before relying on the verification.

Captcha won't load or expires

Try a different browser, clear your cache, or wait a few minutes — the FBR's captcha service occasionally times out. If the website is unresponsive, fall back to the SMS shortcut (9966) for ATL-only checks.

"Inactive" or "Not on ATL" — what now?

The taxpayer hasn't filed a return for the latest tax year. They need to file (deadline is typically 30 September). Once filed, the ATL status — not the NTN — updates with the next weekly refresh. Until they're on the ATL, any payments to them are subject to the higher Non-ATL withholding rates across most sections.

When to Hire a Tax Professional Instead

FBR online verification is straightforward, but the moment you need to act on what the verification tells you — claim withholding tax credits, contest a notice, or correct a registration mismatch — DIY stops being enough. Frequently Asked Questions About FBR Online Verification

Is FBR online verification free?

Yes. The FBR's online verification portal at iris.fbr.gov.pk and the SMS shortcut to 9966 are both free public services. No login is required.

Can foreigners use FBR online verification?

Yes. The verification portal is open to anyone worldwide — no Pakistani identity is needed to perform a lookup. Overseas Pakistanis routinely verify their own ATL status this way before sending remittances or buying property.

How often does the FBR ATL update?

The first ATL of each tax year is published on 1 March. The list refreshes weekly after that, with newly compliant taxpayers added throughout the year as they file returns and pay any applicable surcharge. (The NTN itself does not update weekly — only the ATL status against it.)

Can I verify a company's NTN using its STRN?

Yes. The FBR online verification portal accepts NTN, CNIC, or STRN as input. The result includes the income tax and sales tax registrations linked to the entity.

What's the difference between NTN verification and FBR online verification?

NTN verification is one type of FBR online verification — specifically, the income tax registration check. The broader term covers ATL, STRN, and any other public lookup the FBR offers via its portal.

Does FBR online verification work for deceased taxpayers?

The portal still returns historical information but flags the status appropriately. Estate-tax filings are handled separately; consult a tax professional if you're managing a deceased taxpayer's affairs.

The Bottom Line on FBR Online Verification

FBR online verification is the cheapest insurance available to anyone transacting in Pakistan's tax system. A 60-second lookup before paying any sizeable invoice protects you from paying double withholding tax, posting a bad input tax claim, or accepting a fake NTN. Bookmark the IRIS portal at iris.fbr.gov.pk and the 9966 SMS shortcut — and verify your own status at least twice a year, especially before any large transaction.
